To aid in the world’s transition to renewable energy, battery storage must become environmentally sustainable, more economical and ethically manufactured. From environmental impact to child labor, tackling issues related to global battery production is no simple task.
A lot of people are talking about the need for more storage of the energy produced by solar and wind, but very few people are working to solve it on a global level, like our guest Mathy Stanislaus, the interim director at the World Economic Forum’s Global Battery Alliance. The Alliance is building a sustainable battery supply chain by 2030 including:
- A 50% reduction in carbon emissions throughout the battery supply chain
- Transforming the economy in the value chain to create 10 million additional jobs and $150 billion in economic value
- Safeguarding human rights and economic development is in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals
- Ensuring safe working conditions, fostering anti-corruption practice and eliminating child/forced labor
- Access to electricity for 600 million additional people in developing countries
