At an altitude of 8,000 feet, the community of Crestone, Colorado breathes rare air in more ways than one. Thirty years old and thriving, Crestone is a Mecca for the alternative building movement with structures including climate battery buildings, papercrete and cordwood houses, earthships, straw bale homes and more. Additionally, it’s an unparalleled spiritual center with a cluster of more than 20 religious temples that serve a peak population of merely 4,000 people.
