Ghana, like the rest of the world has a challenge recycling plastic bags. Only about 2% of their bags are currently making into a recycling program. But, not for long. Nelson Boateng of Nelplast has built his own recycling machine from scrap metal, electrical wires and motors, and eight months after, started operations to collect and recycle almost 2000kg of plastic waste from Ashaiman areas—laying some of the plastic pavement blocks free of charge, back in his community.

In addition to paving blocks, the company manufactures recycled plastic roofing tiles and provides consulting services to help others set up recycling companies. Their company goals include capturing 70% of the total plastic waste stream into their products.
